Background Information

To Kill a Mockingbird was written during a tumultuous period in American history. It was a time of Jim Crow laws, civil rights, political concerns over Stalin and Hitler, and the Great Depression. It was also a time to celebrate American culture as Langston Hughes, Marion Andersen, Judy Garland, and Charles Lindburgh captured the public's hearts and imaginations.
